Professor of American Indian Studies, Political Science, Law and American Studies
University of Minnesota

Dr. David E. Wilkins is the McKnight Presidential Professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota. He holds adjunct appointments in Political Science, Law, and American Studies.

He teaches and writes in the areas of comparative politics, federal Indian policy and law, and Native governance. He has written, co-authored, edited, and co-edited eleven books and numerous articles and essays.

 

Professor Wilkins received his B.A. in Sociology from Pembroke State University in 1976, his M.A. in Political Science and American Indian Policy from the University of Arizona in 1982, and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1990. From 1984–87, he was an instructor at the Navajo Community College, Tsaile, Navajo Nation, Arizona.

After earning his Ph.D., Professor Wilkins returned to the University of Arizona where he taught in the Political Science department and American Indian Studies until 1999 when he moved to Minnesota.  He has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, and the Fulbright Foundation.
